Recent market research has clearly indicated the need among project management professionals for the development of general management leadership skills compatible with focused project management endeavors. A successful demonstration of leadership skills while executing projects in the corporate setting is critical to advancement in both project management and operational management roles. In that regard, and considering that in the past two PMI Membership Needs Assessments, leadership skill development was identified as one of the top two stakeholder priorities, there is an increasingly strong rationale that PMI ensure such development be available.

As part of the Institute抯 35th anniversary, PMI will publish a Leadership in Project Management Annual in December 2004, the first in a series of publications solely devoted to leadership skills essential for the project management practitioner. In addition to distributing the issue to all members concurrent with the mailing of its other monthly publications in December 2004, the Leadership in Project Management Annual will be distributed throughout 2005 to new members as part of their new member kit.

One goal of this endeavor is to ?I>mainstream the message?of project management so that practitioners can effectively articulate the intrinsic value of project management concepts to business, government and academic officials, while consistently demonstrating its ability to deliver organizational strategies. It will specifically address key knowledge areas and identify best practices in terms of communication skills, risk mitigation, teamwork and documentation of return on investment.
